The leaning tower of books: DIY book holder

22 Jan 2025

Add a pop of personality to your home with this easy DIY leaning book holder. It’s the perfect way to showcase your favourite reads in style. With just a few tools, some untreated pine and a splash of creativity and Resene colour, you’ll have a functional and colourful display piece in no time.

You will need:

  • Untreated pine board, 180mm wide x 18mm thick x 900mm long

  • Saw

  • Jig saw

  • Sandpaper

  • Resene Quick Dry

  • Paintbrush

  • Cloth

  • ReseneAquaclear

  • Wood glue

  • Electric drill

  • Screws

  • ReseneColorwood wood stain. Fleur used the colour Resene Teak

Step 1: Start by cutting the pine board into three lengths. The main base board of Fleur’s book holder is 35cm long, the red upright is 15cm and the purple foot is 2.5cm. Round off two of the corners on the two short board lengths – you can either sand these or use a jig saw. Sand all rough edges smooth.

Step 2:Prime the two short lengths of board with a coat of Resene Quick Dry and once this is dry, paint the middle length board (the upright) with two coats of your chosen shade and paint the foot with two coats of another chosen shade. Fleur used Resene Red Berry and Resene Kingfisher Daisy for these two pieces. Use a cloth to stain the longest board length (the base board) with one coat of ReseneColorwood in your chosen colour. Fleur used Resene Teak for hers. Once this is dry, seal it with two coats of ReseneAquaclear satin.

Step 3:Once everything is dry, use wood glue to glue the foot to the underside of the base board. Inset it by 18mm (the thickness of the board). Use a couple of 40mm long screws to screw through the bottom of the foot and into the base. Glue the upright at the other end and on the top side of the base board. Use three 65mm screws to screw through the bottom of the base board and into the upright. Place some books on and enjoy!
