If you’re looking for functional yet stylish storage solutions with a commitment to sustainability, look to Lundia. Founded in 1962 by Monte Stone, Lundia offers more than just practical storage – you can also personalise your shelves by selecting colours and finishes from the extensive range of Resene paints and wood stains.
With an easy-to-use online configurator, you can design your own shelving system by choosing from a palette inspired by nature. This ability to customise means you can integrate your shelving seamlessly into your home’s aesthetic.
“Our configurators allow customers to create their own shelving online or work with one of our designers to find the perfect solution,” says Wendy Claydon from Lundia. “It’s all about giving our clients the flexibility to personalise their space while making a sustainable choice.”
We tested out Lundia’s configurators online to create a couple of examples:
To design this mid-century inspired piece, we used the Classic Shelving Designer tool and chose the colours Resene Rivergum, Resene All Black and Resene Moroccan Spice.
For a more vivid and colourful design, we chose Resene Paua for the sides of this shelving unit, and Resene Paris Daisy for the shelves.
Lundia’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond just using New Zealand-grown FSC-certified Radiata Pine. The company also uses Resene Eco Choice-approved waterborne paints, stains and lacquers, choosing low-VOC, low-odour products that are safer for both the environment and the people applying them.
“The move to water-based finishes was a no-brainer for us, as we’re always striving to make eco-conscious decisions,” says Wendy. “Resene’s waterborne coatings offer significant advantages for everyone involved – from the applicator to the end user.”
The Resene AquaLAQ coating system provides over sixty stain colour options in the Resene Colorwood range, offering a sustainable yet stylish finish. These products ensure durability and a refined look for every piece of Lundia furniture while adhering to the company’s environmental goals. “We love the flexibility of Resene products,” Wendy says. “Whether it’s a matte, gloss or satin finish, we let our customers choose. And with Resene’s rapid drying formula, the process is quicker and more efficient.”
Nature’s beauty and functionality deeply influence Lundia’s design ethos. The use of plantation-grown pine reflects their biophilic design principles, bringing a sense of nature indoors. Their approach transforms homes and offices into harmonious environments where natural elements and modern design come together. Colour choices, among many, include Resene Rivergum, Resene Pattens Blue and Resene Desert Sand.
Lundia Eco Box designs can also be customised. This design features boxes in Resene Colorwood Whitewash and Resene Ottoman.
The modular nature of the shelving means it’s highly adaptable to various spaces, making it ideal for everything from TV units, home studies, wardrobes, to room dividers and garage storage.
Although Monte Stone officially retired at age 90, his passion for Lundia’s sustainability journey continues to influence the business today. Lundia’s focus on reducing waste is evident in their production methods. The ‘nesting’ approach ensures minimal waste when cutting timber, and off-cuts are repurposed into smaller items like Lundia’s innovative Eco Boxes. Even wood shavings are collected and reused, demonstrating the company’s full-circle sustainability efforts.
